. so does mitt romney's strategy of saying one thing and then right afterward have his campaign walk it back actually work? alan schroeder is a professor at northeastern university, the author of presidential debates 50 years of high-risk tv. professor, glad to welcome you back into "the war room." is team romney's little two-step with the truth effective? >> you know, unfortunately, i think that strategy is sort of effective and here's the analogy i would use. it's like the newspaper article that gets something wrong. everybody reads the story and gets the mistake in version of what happened but the correction that comes out the next day is on page 35 in a little box and nobody sees it. and so that's what happens here. it really has to get corrected during the debate and that was the job of course of barack obama and for whatever reason, he didn't do it. >> jennifer: let it go means that you end up missing the opportunity to set the record straight in front of 50 million people. we talked about this last night. -- la

, lower income families with children would pay an average $2,000 more. but mitt romney is right to point out that others have poked holes in the math, including bloomberg, that middle class would be hit with an increase of only $1,000 not $2,000. the tax policy center was told about this. according to bloomberg, the authors changed some of their statements. the conservative tax foundation claims that the center didn't account for economic growth and romney's plan would pay for itself, that there would be no middle class income tax increase. last month came on the show and did the math and said if you close or cap itemized deductions and assume that the economy grows at 3%. historically, that would be reasonable. right now it's been a challenge. they would raise $200 billion, which means you wouldn't have to raise taxes on the middle class. it could add up. if he could sell it, could it be the issue that wins him the election? the senior political analyst and fiscal responsibility and reform. great to see both of you. appreciate it. doug, let me start with you. this stood out to me last n

race is right now. guest: mitt romney is looking very good peer that is why in the obama administration did not want to run against mitt romney. he was the most threatening of the candidates. it is very hard to take on an incumbent. it has only happened -- republicans have only done at one time in the last few years. is in the last time it happened when clinton took out bush? it is curious, for example, there were 70 million viewers of that debate the other night, the highest it has been since 1992, the last time an incumbent was taken out. that is because people are uncomfortable with obama, but if they are not political knocks, like we are, they have not been paying attention, or have not been watching the debates and the just want to see who the challenger is and whether they are comparable with him. after monday night, everybody is pretty comfortable with mitt romney. >> i was reading back on your twitter feed. back in february you were saying conservatives should support mitt romney. is that because of the field or because of his conservative credentials? i was reading>> i was tota
